For the past 2+ years while we have been releasing CorePlayer 1.x we have been also working on 2.x which brings a whole new layer of usability to CorePlayer and in doing so we compare CorePlayer to an Operating System (as hard as that is to believe) because of its modular design and non-reliance for any runtimes.

Now for a big FYI for Channels/content/Plug-ins.

The initial 2.0 release will not have the 'dynamic' channels (YouTube is hard coded in the 1.x version now)... in later 2.x releases (NOT THE INITIAL 2.0 RELEASE) we will release the Channel content feeds that we call our 'Web Guide'. For other non-feed content and Channels that require specialized handling (Orb, YouTube, etc.) the channel (login, settings, etc.) we will be released via download-able plug-ins utilizing a Lua based technology called CoreLua that is customized for the CorePlayer Platform.

There is one thing that is a requirement to use these services, and that when we launch our plug-in system we are doing so under our Core Account.... like (Pandora, Orb, etc.) What's the Core Account? The CA as we call it, is your personal account here at CoreCodec and allows us to customize the user experience for our customers. Think of it as a mashup of Steam Vs. Pandora Vs. Apple Account, and you'll start to understand where we are going.

As a side note..... you can alternatively choose to not use any of the Core Account services at all and just leave it as stand alone media player just it is now (but with no YouTube), however not using the services will not allow you to:
- download any plug-ins (upnp, dlna, ftp, remote control, etc.)
- save player settings
- List any Web Guide content... YouTube, Revision3, etc.
- Save/Share/Post Benchmark results
- Utilize our http://lmk.im services (URL shortener, picture/text sharing) etc.

Our longer term plan is to roll out multiple account services with each 2.x release leading up to 3.0 version that features full XMPP integration.

On the iPhone...
After we release 2.0. We will also submit it for a review for the Apple AppStore. Will it get approved? Its anyone's guess.... but if by chance we do get rejected, we do have plans to sell it via the Cydia Store. So either way ppl get to benefit from our hard work over the past 2 years on it.

Good to know what is going on and what are your plans :)
Do you plan on updating this topic in the future with informations about upcoming releases or was this only one time occasion?

Cool. Sounds exciting. Just dont forget what made TCPMP and CP great. Not the services ect around the player. Just a great media player with good basic features. This account services integration sounds great, but I would be much more pleased just to have gapless playback when I listen to my music..

Well gapless has always been on the radar.... but not a high priority because of the resources it would use as well as the effort to add it. This would require us to write a form of prefetch buffer.... I guess now that caching is done... it could be just a matter of now manipulating the cache.

I'll ping the guys.... but this would probably be best suited to be a plug-in as well.

So 1.3.5 is dropped and we'll get a trimmed 2.0 at the end of september?

Accoding to BB there will still be an update to 1.x to fix the youtube issue. Betaboy, is that update going to be released at the same time as 2.0?

We will release 2.0 initially for Window Mobile, CE, Pocket PC, Symbian.... and we are still debating to support the old Palm OS. If we do release it for Palm... it might be released as a 'last time thank you' for their support... but note that we are already migrating to the Pre's WebOS. The other thing that why some Palm ppl might still want it on their older devices is the new touch UI.

Now a 2.0 for Windows and OS X will come after the initial release as we want to concentrate on the UI some more to showcase all the new features we have been adding to CoreUI.

Thanks for the info BetaBoy.

Unfortunately I stopped using CP long ago because of the performance on my Touch HD. Basically I've never really used it and so far my purchase has been a waste of money. Hopefully that will no longer be the case.

So the question that really matters to me (and many others) is this: will this major release support hardware acceleration on the Touch HD?

I understand that a touch-optimised interface is essential these days but it won't get me using it again. I first came here last November to find out if Qualcomm chips were to be supported, and from what you said they probably would be at some point. A lot of water has passed under quite a few bridges since then, so I'd like to know if we're any closer, or are we there?

Thanks.

Why I want to provide you all with more details, I cannot comment specifically on what you are asking other than what I have said here in the past.

Thanks for the reply BetaBoy. As you still can't talk about it I guess that means version 2 won't include hardware acceleration on the Touch HD.

As I've said before even DirectShow support would be better than nothing; at least I'd get the same performance as I get from WMP.

Directshow support is a step in the right direction..... but I also want to point out the the initial release that all directshow filter settings will be hardcoded into the player.... and that the dialogues for DS will be added in follow-up releases.

Also.... we have to collect settings from as many windows mobile devices as possible on the types of directshow filters installed and their related settings. This way we can add them into the DS DB that will be in the player... We are planning to release a small tool to do this that users can run and then submit it's finding back to us.

Ahh, I wasn't aware that DirectShow support has been added to v2; very good. Might even get me using CP again while I'm waiting for full Touch HD support :)

Although it'll depend on the upgrade deal; I don't want to pay a lot for performance I already have plus a (presumably) finger-friendly interface.

Will there be a trial version for v2?

Hi, All -- I just wanted to underscore the sentiment that gapless playback is really _really_ important. This is the main new feature I'm looking for in deciding whether to purchase future versions of CorePlayer. I've looked closely at versions 1.x and have been really impressed by what I've seen. But the lack of support for gapless playback has kept me from buying myself a copy.

Thanks, Alan

Hey I want gapless as well ;-) but to do so requires we mod the current stack to support a prebuffer... and this is not something we felt comfortable in doing till after the 2.0 network changes are out.

Thanks so much for the quick response, BetaBoy -- I'm glad to hear that gapless playback is still in the cards; I'll be looking with interest as subsequent versions are released...

I've also got a sort of arcane and very speculative question to ask you along these lines. I'm planning to encode a bunch of my CDs in the next few weeks and am keeping my fingers crossed that they'll play nicely with whatever good Windows Mobile player starts supporting gapless playback. (So far, I haven't seen a good player which has!) CorePlayer is my favorite, and I'm hoping you guys start supporting this first.

I'm debating whether to encode to MP3 or M4A (MP4, AAC). Do you have any thoughts (and I realize you may have no clue at this point) about which is more likely to work well with any future gapless playback on CorePlayer? My sense is that MP3 is a more reliable bet for gapless playback than M4A, but I'm not sure.

Thanks!
Alan

It auto updates now in 1.x if you specify a location. It works in the background, however it does scan with a very low priority on purpose. So thousands of files may take more then a few seconds to be visible in the DB.
