It seems that I can't get smooth playback with 1080p 60fps files with version 1.9.5. These files are generated by Sanyo FH1 camcorder. It plays better with cuda off, but not much. CPU utilization is 70 - 90% with Intel Quad Q6600. It seems it's not playing it at 60fps. Anyone else having the same problems? Will CoreAVC support these files in the next version? All other formats like 1080p 30fps and 1080i 60fields/s play without issues.

Thanks...

Come on now? No replies from CoreAVC group? Will CoreAVC decorder support AVC Profile 4.2 ever?

Of course profile 4.2 is already supported, and a quad core should be capable of playing 1080p60 footage smoothly. Perhaps you could post a sample and provide more information, like what OS you are using and which program you are using to play the files.

I have /exactly/ this issue, with the very same camera: The Sanyo VPC-FH1.

It appears to only play back keyframes.

I strongly suspect that the issue here is which codec is being invoked. I'm using Windows 7 and I believe it's still using Microsoft codecs for decoding the video, regardless of the presence or preference of CoreAVC.

I've found some guides online for swapping out the preferred DirectShow decoder, but I have yet to find one that has been updated to reflect the values I've found in my own registry.

So, to put it simply, I think the problem lies in the fact that CoreAVC is simply not being invoked after being installed on Windows 7.

For myself, the following:
    Computer 1:
      OS
        Windows 7 RTM
      Programs
        Windows Media Player
        Expression Encoder 3
        Windows Live Movie Maker
    Computer 2
      OS
        Windows 2008 R2 (RTM)
      Programs:
        Windows Media Player
        Windows Live Movie Maker

GraphEdt.exe indicates that the Microsoft DTV/DVD Decoder is still being invoked after CoreAVC has been installed.

That would be because in Windows 7 Microsoft has changed the behaviour of directshow to prefer their own decoders, no matter how high the merit is set for CoreAVC. The only way around it is to either hack the registry, use a media player that uses built-in codecs (like CorePlayer) or use a player that allows you to specify which decoder to use (like Media Player Classic).

I also have a Sanyo VPC-FH1. The 1080P 60FPS files worked fine on Vista Ultimate on several media players including WMP and Nero Showtime. The only application that I've found that plays the files just fine on Windows 7 is Arcsofts Digital Theater which came with my Aiptek GVS camcorder. Nero and WMP are both the same, choppy. I tried Splash lite, slightly better but still not acceptable. Only thing about Arcsofts digital theater is the file takes a few seconds longer than the others to load, but the videos play the way they are supposed to. Why Windows decided to tweak this feature I have no idea. So it appears Windows 7 has the ability to play these files, just a matter of using the right codecs.

I've been testing some Sanyo 1080P 60fps AVC mp4 samples,
you can download these for reference:

http://ckworks.sakura.ne.jp/data/xacti_ ... 2a_mp4.zip
http://ckworks.sakura.ne.jp/data/xacti_ ... _1_mp4.zip
http://jp.sanyo.com/xacti/products/line ... 000_01.zip

system: Win7 32bit / Q6600 / 8800GT / 4GB RAM

results:

MPC+CoreAVC 2.0 (w/CUDA) plays @ ~40fps, GPU Usage: 40%
MPC+CoreAVC 2.0 (w/o CUDA) plays @ 60fps, GPU Usage: 50%

Splash Lite 1.0.5 (HW Acceleration Enabled) Plays @ 60fps, GPU Usage: 10%
Splash Lite 1.0.5 (HW Acceleration Disabled) Plays @ 60fps, GPU Usage: 44%

conclusion: not smooth / slow motion with CUDA for 1080p 60fps AVC. please fix it.

Have you tried using overlay render mode in MPC? I have an ATI card so I wouldn't be able to use the cuda stuff but my card does support DXVA, those vids are slow for me to in dxva if I have the renderer in something other then overlay like VMR9. Your system might not be able to handle very well the amount of data going to and from the gfx card with hardware accel.

If I understand how it works exactly, in vmr9 render mode with DXVA the video stream is sent to the card for decoding and then sent back to the cpu for post processing(adding subtitles and the such.) then sent back the gfx card again to be viewed on the monitor, if the data is sent back and forth completely uncompressed(not entirely sure that it is.) there's a large amount of data going back and forth, an uncompressed frame of 1080P video would be somewhere around 6mb(24bit color) or 8mb(32bit color.) in size. Overlay mode doesn't send the decoded stream back to the cpu, so it uses a lot less system bandwidth.

Thanks applejack,
I will hold off on upgrading to coreavc 2.0 until this is fixed.

applejack... rename the files with the file extension of .MKV and post the results of playback Vs. before.

There are 2 different problems mentioned in this thread, it's unclear which one is pertaining to the original post.

First: The problem with CoreAVC not overriding MS's decoder was fixed with the release of CoreAVC 2.0, which was designed to be win7 compatible.

Second: Older nvidia cards (such as the 8800GT) were targetted at accelerating blu-ray playback, and may have problems handling streams at 1920x1080 or higher above 30fps. As cartman-2000 suggested try using a different renderer (especially one that supports YV12) to minimize the data being sent over the bus. Alternatively, just stick to software mode for these streams.
